A Changeover Switch is an inlet installed into your switchboard and allows you to change from mains power to a generator power source. You can run your generator to provide power your fridge and freezer without the Changeover Switch by plugging extension cords directly from the fridge to the generator. However this won’t provide a power source to your hard wired appliances such as ceilings fans, air conditioning units, hot water, oven, cooktop and pool pump. Or for businesses, think IT equipment, lighting, cash registers, security and stock control systems.
There are a couple of ways to install this service. One is with automatic switching capability. In this instance, the equipment senses fluctuations in power and will change from mains to generator power the instant power is lost. This is of great benefit for particular situations such as hospitals, restaurants and other places that may rely on refrigeration to hold stock for example. The equipment can also be installed to require more human intervention. A manual switch is most commonly used in households.
