“Electrically, this type of project must consider the capacity of the switchboard, exit and emergency lighting, surge protection, data and communications requirements, lighting design both in function and ambiance which all must comply with current electrical standards and best practise.”
Brad Sims, BH Electrics

Understanding Your Needs

When choosing your electrical contractor, it’s important to make sure they have taken the time to fully understand the scope of the job before getting started. Taking the time to understand your needs up front will help to ensure that the job is completed on time and on budget.

Are there any constraints in getting work completed during business hours? Have they taken time to understand the building and any limitations imposed by the landlord? There may be rules about what changes can be made to the facade, or power supply capacities.

Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions. Electricians can sometimes use a language that sounds foreign. There is lots of lingo in this trade. Make sure your contractor takes the time to fully explain the build so you can be confident that you will be happy with the finished product.

Good Relationships = Good Outcomes

It’s important to choose an electrical contractor who communicates well with you. A contractor who is unable or unwilling to take enough time to communicate clearly may lead to an unsatisfactory end result.

During the build you may have questions and it’s important that you engage a contractor who is willing to help you and work with you to ensure you get your desired outcome.

Working with a builder? Fantastic! A fit out or refurbishment project often takes many different trades to complete. A builder can help co-ordinate those trades to work together and avoid delays. You just need to be confident that your electrician is communicating well with Builders and other trades. A project needs to flow in a sequence, so it’s important that all parties understand their cog in the wheel.

In Depth Quote

An in-depth quote should address all the specifications on the job. Comparing your electrical quotes can be almost impossible. The cheapest quote may be just that. Or it may be an indication of an inexperienced or a lax operator with poor attention to detail. A quote that does not address all specifications of the job may lead to an unexpected cost blow out or an incomplete job.

Variations to a quote are a common occurrence and they are not all ways the “end of the world”. A build will often throw something unexpected up and the first plan needs to be reconsidered. In fact, being able to work in a flexible way is a vital skill to help you get the best result. What’s important is how your electrical contractor manages these. In case of a variation, the contractor should always come to you with options not problems to discuss.

Five Star Workmanship

Your contractor should be proud to provide you with evidence of their five-star workmanship. As a first point of reference, check the contractors web site for testimonials from clients or blog posts of recent projects.

High quality workmanship encompasses being efficient and trustworthy. Turning up on time can be critical when working with multiple trades. Are they interested in developing a lasting relationship with you? Ask about the services they can provide to you after the build is complete. Always ask about the company’s workmanship warranty. Will they stand behind their work with a guarantee?

Safety First Approach

On a building site, working around electricity can be very safe when workers properly identify and control hazards. But, inadequate training, lack of experience and failure to recognize potential hazards could result in electric shock or death. And the risk doesn’t stop there.
It’s vital for the safety of your staff, your customers and yourself that all electrical work has been completed to meet all Australian electrical safety standards. It’s also vital that the products used should meet Australian standards and are fit for purpose. Unfortunately, some operators use cheap imported products or products that are made for domestic not commercial grade installation. In some cases, these products may not have been tested to meet the requirements of the relevant product specific standards. This can lead to increased risk of fire or electrocution in the future.
On-going safety checks are also mandatory. Your appliances and safety devices should be tested on a regular basis.

Continuity in Service

Life in Far North Queensland can be hard on electrical products. Vermin have been known to eat through meters of cable over-night. Then there are geckos, humidity, torrential rain, human error and many more factors which can have an impact on your electrical supply or on your equipment.

Choosing an electrical contractor who knows the ins and outs of your building and appliances and can be there quickly to help restore power is an important factor for the future success of your business.
