The story

Bought in 2017, on the tools ever since

Brad is a licensed electrician. He still runs the sales side and jumps in on the tools with the team, rather than running the business from a distance. He is backed by an experienced administrator who keeps the job management, scheduling, compliance records and accounts on track.

The business itself is older than our stint in it. Blake Henning started it in 2007 and ran it for ten years before we took the keys, which is where the BH comes from. Nearly two decades of Douglas Shire wiring sits behind the name, and a fair bit of that history is still in the switchboards around town.

We are based at Shop 3, Port Traders on the Captain Cook Highway at Craiglie, five minutes from Macrossan Street. It is a real workshop with real stock in it, not a mobile number and a ute.

The team

Six on the tools, and an office you can reach

Four A-grade electricians and two apprentices do the work, backed by an experienced administrator who keeps the job management, scheduling, compliance records and accounts on track. Big enough to cover a resort shutdown and small enough that the person who prices your job is the person who knows it.

The apprentices are ours. We put them through, we take them out to the remote jobs, and they learn on the same buildings they will still be working on in ten years.

Work with us

How we work

Four steps, no mystery

  1. 01 You call the office: A person answers. You get asked what is going on, where you are, and how urgent it is. Emergencies go straight to whoever is closest.
  2. 02 You know how it is charged before we come: Everyday work is charged for the time and the materials, and we tell you how that works when you book rather than at the end. Planned work like a rewire or a switchboard upgrade is quoted in writing. Once we have found the fault, you hear what it takes to fix it before we carry on.
  3. 03 We turn up when we said: Booked in with a time where the job allows it, or a four hour window when it does not, because fault finding is not something you can pin to the minute. Either way you get a call if we are running late, because sitting around waiting on a sparky is nobody's idea of a good day.
  4. 04 You get the paperwork: Installation work comes with a Certificate of Testing and Compliance. Body corporates and agents get quotes and records in a form the committee can actually approve.

Safety. Integrity. Efficiency.

Three words we live by

Every trade business has values on a wall somewhere. Ours are not just for the wall. They are how we do every job.

Safety
Electricity kills people who take shortcuts. We test, we isolate, we tag, and we do not leave a board half finished because it is knock-off time. If something on your site is unsafe we will tell you, even when it is not the job you called us for.
Integrity
Where we quote, we invoice what we quoted. If a job turns out bigger than expected we stop and talk to you first. If we get something wrong we come back and fix it, and you do not pay twice.
Efficiency
Planned work beats rework. The vans carry stock, the boys know the buildings, and the office keeps the run sheet tight so you are not waiting a fortnight for a two hour job.

Awards and community

Four years running at the Douglas Business and Tourism Awards

Winner in 2016, 2018 and 2019, runner up in 2017. No other trade business in the Shire has matched that run, and it means more to us because it is the local community and industry doing the deciding. In 2018 we also picked up a NECA Excellence Award, judged by the electrical industry itself.

We also sponsor the Port Douglas AFL Club, because a town this size does more for a business than any award can, and a footy club needs the support.
