Need more power points, or ones that survive the salt air?

Most power point jobs we do are one of three things. You have run out of points where you actually need them, an old one has gone loose or scorched, or you want a weatherproof point outside that will survive on a coastal block. All three are straightforward, and most are done in a single visit.

What we do most

We have logged 1,957 power point jobs since 2020, alongside 8,840 fault finding calls, so we see both ends of it: the new install and the mess that shows up years later. Typical work is adding a double power point to a bedroom or garage, running a dedicated point for a fridge or a pool pump, swapping tired old points for Clipsal Iconic, putting USB points beside beds and desks, and fitting weatherproof outdoor points on patios, sheds and pontoons.

If you are renovating, tell us early. Deciding where power points go at rough-in stage costs nothing. Deciding after the gyprock is on means chasing walls. We do 1,701 kitchen renovation jobs and 1,211 bathroom jobs. The ones that go smoothly are the ones where someone stood in the room with us first and said what goes where.

Outdoor points up here

Salt air is the difference between Port Douglas and anywhere south. An outdoor point on an exposed eastern wall in Craiglie or on the Port Douglas beachfront sits in salt-laden air every day, and cheap fittings corrode from the inside out. We use properly rated weatherproof enclosures with the lid and seal intact. We mount them so water runs off rather than pools, and not where the afternoon squalls drive straight in.

The other one nobody warns you about is ants. Green ants and small black ants nest inside outdoor enclosures and pack them out with debris that holds moisture. Geckos get in behind the plate. It is one of the more common causes of a tripping outdoor circuit in Far North Queensland. If your outdoor point is dropping the safety switch after rain, that is usually where we look first.

Old points, and when to stop patching

A power point that is loose, browned around the pins, warm to touch or crackling when you plug something in needs replacing now, not next month. Loose connections make heat. Same goes for a plug that falls out under its own weight. Cracked plates and painted-over points are cosmetic until they are not.

If the whole house is on old wiring and you are replacing points one at a time, we will tell you honestly whether you are better off doing the circuit properly. We are not going to quietly keep patching something that needs a rewire.

Safety switches

Adding power points is a good moment to check what protects them. In Queensland, owners must have approved safety switches on general purpose socket-outlets within 90 days after becoming the owner, or after a residential tenancy they entered into starts. For rentals, every power point circuit must have a safety switch. We do 1,353 safety switch jobs, so if your switchboard needs sorting we can do it in the same visit rather than sending you to someone else.

Adding a point properly

The easy part is the point on the wall

A new power point is twenty minutes if the circuit can carry it, and a different conversation if it cannot.

  1. A burnt out switch mechanism in a gloved hand, the terminals charred black
    01

    Replace what has failed

A point that has been arcing is not a cosmetic problem. Heat marks, a loose terminal or a browned faceplate all mean the same thing and it gets fixed rather than covered.

  2. Open plan living with a timber-lined ceiling, ceiling fan and power points on the rear wall
    02

Put them where you will use them

Behind the bed, beside the bench, out on the deck. The cost is in the cable run, so decide it once and do the lot rather than adding one a year.

  3. A socket tester plugged into a newly installed double power point, reading correct
    03

    Tested before we leave

Polarity, earth and the safety switch checked on the actual point, not assumed from the board.

Straight answers

Power Points: your questions

How much does it cost to add a power point?

The cost of adding a power point depends on the cable run. A new double power point on an existing circuit in a wall with easy roof access is a quick job. The same point on a slab-on-ground wall, or one needing a new circuit back to the switchboard, is a different piece of work, which is why we do not publish rates. Tell us where you want it and what is above and below, and we will price it properly before we start. No surprises on the invoice.

Can I replace a power point myself if I just swap like for like?

No. Replacing a power point is electrical work, and in Queensland that means a licensed electrician. It is not a legal technicality either. The point behind the plate is live. The terminations are what cause the heat problems we get called to, and there is no safe way to check your own work without test gear. Installation work also has to be certified, and we issue a Certificate of Testing and Compliance for it.

Why does my outdoor power point keep tripping the safety switch after rain?

Usually moisture ingress or insects. Up here, ants and geckos nesting inside outdoor enclosures are a genuinely common cause, because the debris they pack in holds water against the terminals. Perished seals, a cracked lid or a point mounted where rain drives straight in will do the same. We open it up, find the actual cause and fit a properly rated weatherproof enclosure. Fault finding is our biggest single job category, 8,840 of them.

Can you put USB points in?

Yes, and they are popular beside beds, desks and kitchen benches. Clipsal Iconic does combined power point and USB modules that replace an existing point in the same wall box, so in most cases there is no patching or painting. Worth knowing that USB modules date faster than the power point itself as charging standards change. We will talk through whether you want them everywhere or just in the two or three spots you actually charge things.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard to add more power points?

Sometimes, not always. If your board has spare capacity and working safety switches, we can add a circuit without touching much. If it is full, or your power point circuits are not on a safety switch, that gets sorted first. We will look at the board before quoting and tell you straight either way. We do 1,006 switchboard jobs and 1,353 safety switch jobs, so it can be handled in the same visit.
