When does a switchboard need upgrading?
Plenty of homes in the Douglas Shire still run on rewirable ceramic fuse boards. They are not automatically illegal, and we will not tell you they are. What they are is unprotected: a fuse protects the wiring, it does nothing to protect you.
When an upgrade is genuinely worth doing
- You have just bought the place or started a new tenancy, and the 90 day safety switch obligation applies
- There is no room left on the board for the circuits you actually need
- The board is corroded, water damaged or has been got at by ants and geckos
- You are adding load: air conditioning, a pool, a shed, a hot water changeover, an EV charger
- Circuits are unlabelled or wrongly labelled, which turns every future fault into a treasure hunt
What we install
A properly sized enclosure, safety switch protection so a fault on one circuit does not take out the whole house, a main switch that is where you would expect it, and a legible circuit schedule. We photograph the finished board and send you the picture, because the day you need it is the day the power is off.
The certificate
Installation work is certified by the licensed electrical contractor as being in accordance with the Wiring Rules. You get a Certificate of Testing and Compliance for the work. Keep it with the house papers.

What we install
Clipsal, Schneider Electric, NHP and Hager switchgear. All of it available through the Cairns and Port Douglas wholesalers, so a future fault does not wait on a Brisbane freight run.

Still working out what is wrong?
We have written up the faults that usually point to this work, and what each one means:
- Switchboard buzzing, humming or hot to touch
- Circuit breaker keeps tripping
- Why your lights are flickering
- Half the house has no power
Who we do it for
We do this work for homeowners, businesses, property managers, body corporates and resorts.
What an upgrade involves
Old board out, compliant board in, labelled so the next person can read it
A switchboard upgrade is a day with the power off and a decade of not thinking about it afterwards.
-
01What is in there now
Rewirable ceramic fuses, no safety switches, and circuits nobody has labelled since the house was built. This is the starting point in a lot of Douglas Shire homes.
-
02The new board, wired properly
Every termination torqued, every circuit on its own protection, and the busbar work done so it can be inspected rather than hidden.
-
03Labelled, tested and certified
You get a board somebody can read at nine at night with a torch, and a Certificate of Testing and Compliance for it.
Straight answers
Switchboard Upgrades: your questions
Do I legally have to replace a ceramic fuse board?
There is no Queensland law that says a rewirable fuse board must be replaced simply because it is old. The obligation that usually forces the issue is the safety switch requirement on power point circuits, and the fact that new or altered work has to comply with the Wiring Rules. We will tell you which of those actually applies to you.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take?
A straightforward domestic board change is usually a day, with the power off for a good part of it. If there are surprises in the meter box or the mains need attention it can run longer, and we will tell you before we start if that looks likely.
Will I need to involve Ergon in a switchboard upgrade?
Sometimes. If the mains, the metering or the service connection need work, that gets coordinated with the distributor. We handle that end of it.
