What a normal service call looks like
One electrician, in a stocked ute, with the test gear on board. We find out what is going on before we start pulling things apart, because testing is how you locate a fault properly rather than swapping parts and hoping. If it is a quick fix we do it there and then. If it turns into a bigger job, you get told what we found and what it needs, and you decide. Installation work is finished with a Certificate of Testing and Compliance from us, which is the contractor's job to issue, not yours to chase.
Why things fail up here
Tropical coastal work is its own animal. Salt air eats terminations and outdoor fittings within sight of the water. Wet season humidity gets into anything not sealed properly. Ants and geckos nest inside outdoor enclosures and pool equipment. They are a common cause of nuisance tripping and we find them most weeks. Storm and cyclone season adds water damage, and after a flood the installation has to be verification tested by a licensed electrician before the distributor will reconnect. On acreage it is usually tank and bore pumps, and long runs that were never sized for what is on them now.
Houses, resorts, shops, farms
The domestic work sits alongside a lot of accommodation and commercial. Several of the big resorts and apartment complexes, one of the town's real estate agencies and the Court House Hotel are all long standing. We service the Low Isles lighthouse 15 kilometres offshore in our own boat, and do compliance work for QPWS ranger bases across Cape York, the Wet Tropics and the Daintree.
One thing worth putting in the diary. Every existing Queensland home, townhouse and unit needs interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms meeting AS 3786-2014 by 1 January 2027. Landlords and anyone selling before then should get it sorted early rather than in the rush.
What we install
We fit Clipsal and HPM accessories because they hold up and we can get parts fast, and Schneider Electric and NHP gear in switchboards that have to survive salt air and a wet season.
- Clipsal
- Schneider Electric
- HPM
- NHP
Who we do it for
We do this work for homeowners, businesses, property managers, body corporates, resorts and builders.
What a job actually looks like
Open it up, find it, put it back properly
Most electrical work is not the thing you can see afterwards. It is the half hour with the board open, working out what somebody else did fifteen years ago.
-
01We open it up
Nothing gets diagnosed from the front of a board. Covers off, test, and find out what is actually in there before anybody quotes a repair.
-
02We work around the building
Raked ceilings, exposed beams, block walls, no roof space. Up here the building decides how the job gets done, not the catalogue.
-
03And we clean up after ourselves
The measure of an electrician is what the room looks like when they leave. Tidy terminations, labelled circuits, nothing left on the floor.
Straight answers
Electrician: your questions
How quickly can you get an electrician to me in the Douglas Shire?
Depends what it is. Genuine emergencies (no power, a burning smell, water through a switchboard) are answered 24/7 and someone starts moving as soon as we have the details. Commercial customers have the Same Day Service Guarantee: ring by 2pm on a business day and we attend that day. Booked work like a fan swap or a lighting change usually lands within a day or two. After a big storm it stretches, because half the coast rings at once. Ring and we will give you a straight answer on timing rather than a maybe.
What does an electrician cost in Port Douglas?
What an electrician costs in Port Douglas comes down to what we find once we have looked at the job. A fault call on an older Port Douglas house can be twenty minutes or most of a day, so we do not publish rates. Quoting a number before anyone has looked at it helps nobody. What we do is tell you what we have found before we start fixing it, and if it grows into a bigger job we price that properly first. Describe the problem over the phone and we will give you a realistic idea of the scope.
Can I change a power point or a light fitting myself?
No. In Queensland that is licensed electrical work no matter how small it looks, and testing is expressly classed as energised electrical work, including locating faults and verifying that an installation complies. Beyond the legal side, the faults we find most in this climate are the ones a DIY job will not pick up: corroded terminations and moisture tracking inside outdoor enclosures. Changing a lamp is fine. Anything behind the wall plate needs a licensed electrician.
Do I really need my smoke alarms upgraded before 2027?
Yes, if it is a Queensland home, townhouse or unit. Every existing dwelling has to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms to AS 3786-2014 by 1 January 2027. Interconnected means when one sounds, they all sound. Rentals are tighter again. Alarms must be tested within 30 days before every tenancy starts and that obligation cannot be passed to the tenant. We have done 1,429 smoke alarm jobs and most houses are finished in a single visit.
Do you work outside Port Douglas?
Yes. Craiglie, Port Douglas, Mossman, Newell, Wonga, the rural blocks inland and out towards the Daintree, including acreage and off-grid properties where the bore pump matters as much as the switchboard. We also cross the water to the Low Isles lighthouse in our own boat, and travel for QPWS compliance work across Cape York and the Wet Tropics. If you are not sure whether your address is in range, ring the office and ask.
