Smoke alarm installation that clears the 2027 Queensland law
Every existing home, townhouse and unit in Queensland needs interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by 1 January 2027. We install them, we certify them, and we can do a whole building in one pass.

What does Queensland's 1 January 2027 smoke alarm law require?
Queensland has the toughest smoke alarm law in the country, and the last deadline is close. The Queensland Fire Department states it plainly: all existing private homes, townhouses, units and manufactured homes require interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by 1 January 2027.
Interconnected means when one alarm goes off, they all go off. Photoelectric means the sensing type, not ionisation. The alarms have to comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014.
Who needs them and when
- New builds and substantial renovations requiring building certification: required now, under the Building Regulation 2021.
- Homes sold or leased after 31 December 2021: already required before transfer.
- Every other existing dwelling: 1 January 2027.
Where they go
On every storey, in every bedroom, and in the hallways that connect the bedrooms to the rest of the house. If there is no hallway, between the bedroom and the rest of the dwelling. If a storey has no bedroom, at least one alarm in the most likely path of travel out.
What we do
We scope the dwelling, quote it, and install a compliant interconnected system in one visit. For body corporates and agents we can do a whole building or a whole rent roll in a scheduled run, which works out considerably cheaper than attending one lot at a time.

What we install
We fit AS 3786-2014 compliant photoelectric alarms from brands the Far North wholesalers actually carry, so replacements and warranty claims are handled locally rather than posted to Brisbane.

What the Queensland standard asks for
Photoelectric, interconnected, in every bedroom
The Queensland rules changed and a lot of houses have not caught up. Interconnected means every alarm sounds when one does, which is the part that gets people out.
-
01Test what is there
Age, type and placement. A ten year old ionisation alarm in a hallway meets none of the current requirements.
-
02Wire them together
Interconnection is the requirement people miss. An alarm in the far bedroom is no use if the one that detects the fire is at the other end of the house.
-
03One in every bedroom
That is what the Queensland rule actually asks for, and it is the part most houses fail. Every bedroom, every hallway serving one, and each storey. We check the lot and certify what we fit.
Straight answers
Smoke Alarms: your questions
Has Queensland's 1 January 2027 smoke alarm deadline been extended?
No. As at August 2026 the Queensland Fire Department page carries no extension, deferral or amendment. Treat 1 January 2027 as firm, and expect every electrician in Far North Queensland to be booked out through November and December.
What does interconnected actually mean for smoke alarms?
When any one alarm detects smoke, every alarm in the dwelling sounds. It can be done by hard wiring or by a compliant wireless link. On an existing home a wireless interconnect is usually the least invasive option.
Do I need interconnected smoke alarms if I am renting the place out?
Yes, and there is a second obligation on top. The Residential Tenancies Authority requires the manager or owner to test the alarms and replace flat batteries within 30 days before the start of a tenancy, and states this obligation must not be passed on to the tenant. Source: RTA Queensland.
Can I install smoke alarms myself?
Hardwired alarms are electrical work and require a licensed electrician. Beyond the law, an alarm that is in the wrong place or not properly interconnected does not comply, and the certificate is what a buyer, a tenant or an insurer will ask for.
