Why do shopfront signs fail in Port Douglas, and what does it take to fix them properly?
If your sign has gone dark, the fault is usually the driver, the transformer or water in a joint, not the sign itself. That matters, because it turns a full sign replacement into a repair. We have done 680 illuminated signage jobs since 2020, mostly shopfronts, resort entries and pylon signs between Port Douglas and Mossman. Most of them came back on with new gear inside the existing housing.
Commercial customers get our Same Day Service Guarantee: ring by 2pm on a business day and we attend that day. A dark sign on Macrossan Street costs you trade every night it stays off, so we treat it as a priority job rather than something to book in for next fortnight.
What actually kills signage up here
External signage in Far North Queensland has a harder life than the same sign in Brisbane. Five things account for nearly everything we pull apart.
- Salt air. Anything within a few streets of the water corrodes at the fixings, the gland and the earth connection first. A sign can look fine from the footpath while the terminals behind it are green.
- Wet season humidity. Moisture gets into a housing through a tired seal, then condenses on the driver. That is the single most common reason a sign flickers before it dies.
- Ants and geckos. Not a joke. Green ants and geckos nest in outdoor enclosures and bridge terminals, and we find them in signage, bollards and light fittings constantly.
- Storm season. Wind flexes the sign, the flex chafes where it enters the housing, and the circuit trips weeks later.
- Cheap gear. Drivers with no IP rating, fitted by whoever was cheapest at the time, usually mounted where water can sit on them.
What the job involves
For a repair we isolate the sign, test it live to find the actual fault (locating faults is energised electrical work, so it is not a job for the shop manager), then replace the failed component and reseal the housing properly. Most repairs are one visit. If the housing is full of water or the internals have gone, we will tell you straight rather than replacing a driver that will fail again by March.
For a new sign we handle the supply from the switchboard, the circuit protection, the cabling and penetration through the facade, an accessible isolation switch, and the fit-off with your signwriter. Wiring is to AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules, and you get a Certificate of Testing and Compliance for the installation work. Keep it. Insurers and landlords ask for it.
Who we look after signs for
Pubs, resorts, shopping centres and single shopfronts. The Court House Hotel and Central Plaza are both long standing, along with several more of the town's pubs and resorts. Our signage work sits inside 8,998 jobs of every kind in Port Douglas since 2020, across 1,028 separate customers. Signage is a slice of that, but it is the slice the whole street can see.
If you have more than one sign, get them checked before the wet rather than after. We can run a scheduled check on the drivers, seals and isolation while we are on site for your other work, which beats an emergency callout on a Saturday night in February.

What we install
We fit Haneco, Osram and Clipsal gear in signage because it survives the salt air and we can get replacement parts without waiting a fortnight.

Illuminated signage
Lit, weatherproof, and switched on a timer
Signage is the one piece of electrical work your customers actually look at. It is also outdoors, in the tropics, on a wall nobody can reach.
-
01Access first
A-frame, platform ladder or a cherry picker. Working out how to reach it safely is half the quote and all of the reason people leave a sign dark for a year.
-
02Weatherproof, from the supply up
Sealed gear, correct IP rating and a circuit that will not nuisance trip in the wet season. A sign that goes out in every storm is a sign nobody trusts.
-
03On when you are open
Timer or photocell, so it is lit when there is somebody to see it and off when there is not.
Straight answers
Illuminated Signage: your questions
Half my sign is lit and the rest is dead. Can you just fix that section?
Usually yes. Illuminated signs are normally run in sections or strings off separate drivers, so a dead section points to one driver, one connector or one water ingress point rather than the whole sign. We test to find which. If the failed section uses gear that is no longer made, we will look at matching the colour temperature across the sign so it does not end up with one warm half and one cold half, because a mismatched sign looks worse than a dark one.
Can my signwriter or shopfitter change the tubes and drivers?
No. Anything connected to the mains supply is electrical work and has to be done by a licensed electrician. Signwriters build and install brilliant signs, and we work alongside them regularly, but the power side is ours. It is also a practical thing. The reason a sign fails a second time is almost always the seal and the gland, and that is the part a non-electrical trade tends to put back the way they found it. Get the signwriter to do the face, get us to do the wiring.
What does illuminated sign repair or replacement cost?
Illuminated sign work is priced on whether it is a repair or a replacement, and on what it takes to reach and supply the sign. A signage job can be a quick driver swap or a full supply run from the switchboard with an elevated work platform out on the highway, which is why we do not publish rates. What we will do is look at it, tell you whether it is a repair or a replacement, and quote the replacement work before we start. For a fault on an existing sign we will normally give you the honest answer on site, including when the right call is to stop spending money on an old housing.
Can you convert my old fluorescent sign to LED?
Usually, and it is worth doing. Fluorescent signage in a coastal climate means tubes, starters and a lot of internal gear to corrode. Converting to LED means fewer components, less heat, less current draw and far fewer callouts. We fit Haneco, Osram and Clipsal gear because it holds up here and we can get parts fast. In most cases the existing housing and face stay, so you are paying for internals and labour rather than a new sign.
Do you have to shut the shop or the restaurant to work on the sign?
Rarely. Most signage work is on a dedicated circuit, so we isolate the sign and leave the rest of the premises live. If we do need the main switchboard off, we book it for before opening or after close. We run 24/7 callout and we do a lot of work for pubs and resorts that cannot trade in the dark, so out of hours is normal for us, not a special favour.
