Can commercial electrical work in Port Douglas be done around your guests and trading hours?

Yes. We stage commercial work around service and guests, isolate the smallest area we can, and work early or late where the job allows, so a resort, pub or shop keeps trading while we are there. When something breaks, ring by 2pm on a business day as a commercial account and you get the Same Day Service Guarantee: an electrician on site that day, not a booking for next week. That guarantee is the whole reason most Port Douglas businesses have us in their phone. A dead cold room, a tripped switchboard or a shopfront with no lights is lost revenue by the hour, which is why we are the call a resort or a pub makes first, not the one they make after trying everyone else.

Fault finding is the bulk of it. Fault finding, no power and nuisance tripping is the biggest thing we do, and a big share of it is commercial. Lighting is next. In Port Douglas alone we have done 8,998 jobs of every kind since 2020, for 1,028 different customers, so there is a fair chance we have already been inside your building.

Working around guests and trading hours

Resorts and pubs cannot shut down while a sparky works. Six of the larger resorts and apartment complexes in Port Douglas have had us on their books, most of them for years. Add the Court House Hotel and three more of the town's pubs and venues and you get the idea. We stage work around service, isolate the smallest area we can, work early or late where the job allows, and clean up before doors open. One of the town's real estate agencies has been sending us to its managed properties for years, which only works if the tenant never has a complaint about how we behaved.

Fit-outs, kitchens, data and signage

Commercial kitchens are their own trade. We have done 1,701 kitchen jobs, 1,051 pump jobs and 547 motor jobs, plus 1,006 switchboard jobs and 2,376 data and Cat6 cabling jobs. Illuminated signage comes in at 680 and exit and emergency lighting at 223. We work with local builders on new fit-outs, and we handle the odd stuff too, from a rainforest visitor centre to a wildlife park and a barramundi farm.

What the tropics do to your gear

Salt air eats coastal fittings. Anything within sight of the water corrodes faster than the catalogue life, especially cheap outdoor lighting and unsealed enclosures. Ants and geckos get into outdoor switchgear and contactors. It sounds like a joke, but it is one of the more common causes of commercial faults up here. Wet season humidity finds every failing seal. Before cyclone season we can log power on a busy switchboard over a week or two if you have unexplained trips. We have done 40 power logging jobs, mostly for operators who got sick of guessing.

Test and tag, and what actually applies to you

In Queensland the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 takes precedence over AS/NZS 3760. The interval depends on how and where the equipment is used, not on a generic sticker cycle. Construction site equipment is 6 months. Service work equipment used without a safety switch is 12 months. Office equipment used without a safety switch is 5 years. We work out on site which category your gear falls into and tag it to match. Testing is energised electrical work, so it is licensed work either way.

Accounts, purchase orders and paperwork

We run account terms for commercial clients. We take purchase order numbers and put them on the invoice, and itemise labour and materials so your bookkeeper is not chasing us. Every job is logged with site history, so the next sparky who attends already knows what was done last time. QLD Electrical Contractor Licence 82270, fully insured, four electricians and two apprentices, and a Certificate of Testing and Compliance issued for installation work.

What we install

We fit Clipsal and Schneider Electric switchgear, NHP gear in commercial boards and Haneco lighting, mostly because they hold up in the tropics and we can get parts out of Cairns fast when something fails mid-service.

Working on a trading site

The work is the easy half. Not closing you is the job.

A shop with the power off is a shop making nothing. Most of what you pay a commercial electrician for is the planning that keeps the doors open.

  1. The BH Electrics crew standing with the builder on a nature strip at smoko, halfway through a job
    01

    Know the building first

We have already been into most of these risers. Knowing which sub board feeds what is the difference between an hour and a day, and you are not paying us to learn it.

  2. A crane lifting plant onto the roof of a Port Douglas building, with the BH Electrics ute and cable drum trailer on the ground below
    02

    Stage it around trading

Early, late, or the day you are shut. Plant lifts, isolations and anything that drops power gets booked around service, not through it.

  3. Commercial fryers wired in and ready for handover in a Port Douglas kitchen
    03

    Handover with the paperwork done

Certificates, test records and a board somebody can read. On a commercial site the paperwork is part of the deliverable, not an afterthought.

Straight answers

Commercial Electrician: your questions

What does a commercial electrical job cost in Port Douglas?

Commercial electrical work is charged one of two ways. Planned work gets a written quote with the labour and materials broken out before we start. Breakdowns and callouts are charged as time and materials and itemised, so you can see exactly what the sparky did and what went in. We do not publish rates, because a shop light swap and a switchboard upgrade in a working resort are not the same job. Ask when you book and we will tell you what it is likely to run to.

How fast is the Same Day Service Guarantee, really?

If you are a commercial customer and you ring by 2pm on a business day, you get an electrician on site that day. Not a phone call, not a booking for Thursday. We also run 24/7 emergency callout for after hours, which for Port Douglas usually means a pub, a resort or a cold room. We have logged 939 emergency jobs. If your problem is going to stop you trading, say so when you ring so we can prioritise properly.

Can you do commercial electrical work at night or outside our trading hours?

Yes, and for most of our resort and pub clients that is normal. We plan the work so the noisy or disruptive part happens when guests are not around, isolate the smallest area we can rather than killing the whole board, and leave the site tidy before you open. If a shutdown is unavoidable we tell you up front how long it will be and book it for your quietest window.

Do we legally have to test and tag everything in the building?

Not everything, and not all on the same cycle. In Queensland the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 takes precedence over AS/NZS 3760, so the requirement depends on the type of work and whether the equipment is used with a safety switch. Construction equipment is 6 months. Service work equipment without a safety switch is 12 months. Office equipment without a safety switch is 5 years. We walk the site, sort your equipment into the right categories and tag what actually needs it.

Our switchboard looks old. Does it have to be replaced?

Old does not automatically mean non-compliant. What matters is whether it is safe, correctly labelled, has adequate protection for the loads on it and has room for what you want to add. We will open it up, test it, and tell you plainly whether it needs replacing, upgrading or just tidying. If it can wait, we will say so. Salt air and humidity up here do shorten the life of switchgear, so it is worth a look.
