What changed for pool lights and pool pumps in Queensland in 2025?

From 1 April 2025, water equipment became prescribed electrical equipment under Queensland's amended electrical safety laws. WorkSafe specifically names pool lights and pool pumps, covering equipment designed for use in the interior of a swimming pool, paddling pool, spa or bath.

Being prescribed pulls that equipment into the electrical equipment regulatory framework: supply chain duties for sellers and hirers, licensing requirements for certain work, and the product recall framework. In plain terms, the bar just went up on who can work on your pool gear and what has to be documented.

What we do around water

  • Dedicated pump and heater circuits, correctly rated and protected
  • Pool and spa lighting, including extra low voltage installations
  • Pool area lighting, garden lighting and outdoor points at compliant distances
  • Fault finding on pool equipment that keeps tripping the safety switch, which is one of the most common callouts we get in Port Douglas

Why it matters more here

Port Douglas has an unusually high density of pools per property, and a lot of them belong to holiday lets and resorts where guests are in the water unsupervised. Chlorine, salt and humidity are hard on outdoor electrical gear, and pool equipment sheds are usually the wettest, hottest place on the block.

Still working out what is wrong?

Who we do it for

We do this work for homeowners, resorts, body corporates and property managers.

Around water, the rules change

Salt, chlorine and the zones around a pool

Everything within reach of a pool sits in a defined zone, and the zone decides what may be installed and how far it has to be from the water. It is the part people do not know they are getting wrong.

  1. Galvanised conduit stubs eaten back by salt, rust blooming through the coating
    01

What the air does to it

Chlorine and salt together eat fittings that would last twenty years inland. We specify for where the job actually is, not for the catalogue photograph.

  2. A high-set Queenslander with a pool in the foreground, palms and tropical garden around it
    02

    Work to the zones

Distances from the water edge, the right IP rating, and a safety switch on everything. A pool area is the one place where getting it nearly right is not good enough.

  3. A Port Douglas resort pool lit at dusk
    03

Lit properly, and safe to swim under

Pump and heater circuits, area lighting and the paperwork. Done once and it stops being something you think about.

Straight answers

Pool and Spa Electrical: your questions

My pool pump keeps tripping the safety switch. Why?

Most often moisture has got into the pump motor or the connection, or the motor windings are on the way out. Occasionally it is the pool light. It needs testing to separate them, because replacing the pump when the light is the fault is an expensive way to find out.

Can I install a pool light myself?

No. Work on pool lighting is electrical work and the 2025 change made pool lights prescribed electrical equipment. Beyond the law, this is a light in a body of water that people swim in.

Do you do the electrical on resort and body corporate pools?

Yes, a lot of them. Pool area lighting, pump circuits, RCD protection and the compliance records that go with a commercial pool.
