Is bad WiFi usually a cabling problem?

If the WiFi drops out at the back of the building, or one desk keeps falling back to a slow connection, the router is rarely the problem. It is usually the cable, the termination at the patch panel, or where somebody decided to mount the access point. We have run 2,376 data and cabling jobs since 2020, which makes it our fourth biggest category, and plenty of them start as a network complaint and finish at a badly punched down socket.

Structured Cat6, done as a system

A proper install runs every point back to one place. Cat6 to a central rack or cabinet, terminated on a patch panel, labelled at both ends, tested, and handed over with a record of what goes where. After that you can move a desk, add a camera or swap a switch without pulling ceilings apart again. We fit Excel and Krone hardware on the structured side, Clipsal plates where the points land, and Ubiquiti access points and switching where a site needs real coverage instead of a modem in a cupboard.

Smaller jobs are just as welcome. A TV point in a new spot, two extra points in a home office, a hardwired run to a camera, an access point at the far end of a long house.

Registered cablers, licensed contractor

Our team holds the cabling registration, and BH Electrics is a licensed electrical contractor (QLD licence 82270). That is worth asking about before anyone starts drilling holes in your place. It also means the power side and the data side get done by the same crew on the same visit, rather than two trades blaming each other.

The climate up here is hard on cable

Salt air eats cheap external hardware, particularly access points and enclosures on beachfront blocks. Wet season humidity finds its way into anything not sealed properly. Ants and geckos are a genuine fault cause in outdoor enclosures. We have opened plenty of comms boxes with a nest inside and a dead link because of it. So external runs get UV rated cable in conduit, sealed glands, and hardware picked to last more than one storm season.

Clifton Beach shows how much of this work is out there. Of the 54 jobs we have done in that suburb, 43 were data cabling.

Resorts, holiday lets and back of house

Guest WiFi turns up in online reviews now, so it matters. We look after cabling for several of the larger resorts and apartment complexes, along with a long list of smaller accommodation right across Port Douglas. Multi block sites have their own headaches: runs between buildings, distance limits on copper, guest and staff traffic kept separate, and access points that need to cover a pool deck without being an eyesore.

Work gets staged around occupancy, and the noisy parts can be done out of hours. Commercial customers also get our Same Day Service Guarantee: ring by 2pm on a business day and we attend that day.

What is involved

New builds and renovations: rough-in before the sheeting goes on, fit-off at the end. Existing buildings: we look for a path through the roof space or wall cavities first, and where there is no path we run conduit neatly outside rather than cutting up your walls. Either way, every point is tested and labelled before we leave.

What we install

We fit Excel and Krone on the structured side, Clipsal plates at the wall, and Ubiquiti where a site needs WiFi that actually reaches the far end.

Cabling that will still be right in ten years

Cat6 run properly, terminated and tested

Data cabling is cheap while the walls are open and expensive afterwards. It is also the thing most often done badly, because nobody tests it.

  1. Cable tails and mounting brackets set into a blockwork wall during rough-in on a new house
    01

    Run it while you can

Conduit and cable into blockwork and framing before it is lined. One run now beats a surface duct forever.

  2. Exposed deck joists during a rebuild, with new electrical conduit and cable run alongside, glass doors and hinterland beyond
    02

    Keep it away from power

Separation from mains cable, proper support, and no kinks or tight bends. Cat6 run badly performs like Cat5 and nobody finds out until it matters.

  3. An outdoor lounge with a wall-mounted television, pool table and ceiling fan
    03

    Terminated, tested and labelled

Every data point tested to the standard and the patch panel labelled. Televisions, access points and cameras all land where the plan said.

Straight answers

Data and Cat6 Cabling: your questions

Do I still need cabling if everything runs on WiFi?

Yes, because the WiFi has to plug into something. Every access point needs a cable back to a switch, and that cable is what decides whether the far end of the house or the back block of a resort gets a usable signal. Wireless also drops off fast through concrete, block walls and foil sarking, all of which are common up here. Cable the fixed gear like TVs, desks and cameras, then use access points to cover the rest.

Can I run data cable myself?

Not if it touches the telephone or NBN side of things. Cabling connected to a telecommunications network has to be run by an ACMA registered cabler, and that is law rather than preference. A purely internal run is a different question, and there the roof space is the reason we would rather you did not. Since 1 January 2025 there are restrictions on entering roof spaces, and on work near energised electrical equipment. Most of the good cable paths in a house run straight past live wiring. Our crew holds the cabling registration, so the data and the power get sorted on the one visit. If you want to save money, we are happy to pull cable during a renovation while walls are open and terminate it later.

What does a data cabling job cost?

A data cabling job is priced on how many points you want, how far they run, whether there is an accessible roof space or cavity, single or double storey, and whether we are working in a new build or an occupied building. A four point home office is a very different job to cabling three accommodation blocks, which is why we do not publish rates. Ring us, tell us what you are after, and we will come and quote it properly.

Will data cabling mean cutting holes in my walls?

Usually not many. We look for existing paths first, through the roof space, wall cavities or existing conduit, and most homes up here give us something to work with. Where a wall is sheeted both sides with no access, we will either use a small patch point or run conduit outside and keep it tidy and out of sight. We tell you before we cut anything, not after.

Can you cable a working resort without knocking out the guest WiFi?

That is most of what we do. We stage the work block by block, cut over out of hours where it is unavoidable, and keep the existing gear live until the new run is tested. Back of house, reception and booking terminals get planned first so nothing critical goes down mid changeover. We have been doing this for the bigger resorts and apartment complexes in town for years, and commercial customers also have our Same Day Service Guarantee if something breaks: ring by 2pm on a business day and we attend that day.
