Shed power electricians who size the cable before you dig

Power to a shed, granny flat or workshop is mostly about distance. Get the submain and the cable size right and it runs for decades. Get it wrong and you dig the trench twice.

What size cable does a shed need, when the trench only gets dug once?

The single biggest cost on a shed job is the trench, and the single biggest mistake is undersizing the cable in it. If your shed sits 60 or 80 metres from the house, the cable that would have been fine at 10 metres will drop enough voltage over that run to make a welder struggle, a compressor stall and LED battens flicker every time the pump kicks in. Once the trench is backfilled, fixing that means digging it again. So we size the submain for what the shed will be used for in five years, not what it is used for on handover day.

What we actually do on a shed job

We have done 805 shed and outbuilding jobs. The work usually breaks into four parts. We work out the load, which means asking real questions about welders, hoists, compressors, a second fridge, a caravan point, a granny flat kitchen or a future air conditioner. We calculate cable size against the distance and the voltage drop allowed under AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules, and size to the AS/NZS 3008 tables. We run the submain, almost always underground in conduit at the correct depth with marker tape, because overhead spans across a paddock in cyclone country are asking for trouble. Then we install the shed board. Anything past a couple of lights and a power point needs a dedicated board with its own main switch and safety switches, so you can isolate the shed without walking back to the house in the dark.

Acreage out here has its own problems

Most of this work is on blocks at Shannonvale, Mowbray, Killaloe and up towards Cape Tribulation, and a few things come up over and over. Ants and geckos get into outdoor enclosures and shed boards, nest across the terminals and cause nuisance tripping that looks like a wiring fault until you open the lid. Proper gasketed enclosures and sealed conduit entries fix it. Salt air chews through cheap fittings and unprotected gland plates faster than people expect, even a few kilometres back from the coast. Wet season groundwater finds any conduit that was not sealed and glued properly, and water in a submain conduit is a slow-motion disaster. And on acreage the shed is usually where the bore or tank pump lives, which is why pumps show up 1,051 times in our job history. If the pump is on the shed board, the shed submain needs to carry the starting current without dropping the lights.

Boards, safety switches and paperwork

A shed board is not just a smaller version of the house board. It needs correct earthing back to the main earth, correct labelling, and safety switch protection on the socket-outlet circuits. If the outbuilding is a granny flat or anything someone sleeps in, the smoke alarm rules apply too. Interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms are required in all existing Queensland homes, townhouses and units by 1 January 2027. Worth sorting while the walls are open rather than after the gyprock goes on.

When the job is finished you get a Certificate of Testing and Compliance from us, as the licensed electrical contractor. Keep it. Your insurer, a future buyer and a building certifier will all ask for it eventually, and uncertified shed power is the sort of thing that surfaces at the worst possible moment during a sale.

Who does the work

Brad, Leanne and the team have been running BH Electrics since 2017, and Blake Henning had it for ten years before that. Four electricians and two apprentices, QLD Electrical Contractor Licence 82270, fully insured. We fit Clipsal, NHP and Olex gear on this work because it holds up in the heat and the humidity. If you are planning a shed, ring us before the slab goes down. A conduit stub through the slab costs almost nothing at that stage and saves a core drill later.

What we install

We use Clipsal switchgear and accessories, NHP boards and protection, and Olex cable, because that is what holds up in the heat and the salt air out here.

Power to the shed

A sub-main, a small board, and enough of it

The usual mistake is running one lead from the house. A shed with a proper sub-main and its own board is a different building to work in.

  1. A commercial shed with roller doors and a fenced yard, power and lighting run through
    01

Size the supply for what you will actually do

A welder, a compressor and a fridge is a different sub-main to a light and two points. Getting it right once is far cheaper than a second trench.

  2. A BH Electrics electrician working inside an outdoor meter box, with a portable Honda inverter generator on the ground beside him
    02

    Trench, cable and protect it

Correct depth, correct cable, marker tape, and mechanical protection where it comes out of the ground. Underground runs are the part nobody can inspect later.

  3. An old switchboard in a remote station shed, labelled by hand for the small and large generators, carrying a BH Electrics test record
    03

Its own board, lit and switched

Sub-board with its own safety switches, battens that light the bench rather than the middle of the floor, and points where the tools are.

Shed and Outbuilding Power: your questions

What does it cost to run power to a shed?

Running power to a shed is priced mostly on the trench and the cable size, and both swing with the distance and the ground conditions. A 15 metre run through soft soil to a single lighting and power circuit is a very different job to a 90 metre submain across a driveway to a shed with a welder and a bore pump, which is why we do not publish rates. Ring us, tell us the distance and what you want to run out there, and we will come and look. Work like this gets a written quote before we start, and we will tell you where you can save money, usually by digging your own trench to our spec.

Can I dig the trench for shed power myself to save money?

Yes, and plenty of our customers do. You need it at the correct depth, straight, clear of tree roots, and clear of any other services. Talk to us first so we can mark the route and give you the depth and width, because a trench dug to the wrong spec has to be redone. What you cannot do is lay or connect the cable. Running a submain to an outbuilding is licensed electrical work in Queensland and it has to be done and certified by a licensed electrician.

Do I really need a separate switchboard in the shed?

Not always. For a small garden shed with a light and one power point, a couple of circuits off the house board is usually fine. You want a shed board once you have multiple circuits, a pump, three phase, or anything you would want to isolate on its own. A shed board also means a fault out there does not kill power in the house, which matters when the shed board is the one filling up with ants. We will tell you honestly which side of that line your job falls on.

Can you run three phase to a shed?

Yes. It comes up regularly for workshops with a lathe, a large compressor, a hoist or a big welder, and for bore pumps on acreage. Whether it is straightforward depends on what supply is already at the property. If the house is single phase, upgrading to three phase involves the distributor as well as us, which adds time. Tell us what machinery you are planning to run and we will work out what supply it actually needs, because some gear people assume is three phase is not.

My shed power keeps tripping. Is the cable stuffed?

Usually not. Fault finding is our biggest category by a long way, 8,840 jobs, and shed trips are very often ants or geckos in the board or a weatherproof power point, water in an old junction, or a failing appliance rather than the cable itself. We test to find the actual cause rather than guessing and replacing parts. If it is the submain, we will tell you straight, but we check the cheap causes first.
