How often does test and tag have to be done in Queensland?
Here is the part almost nobody gets right. WorkSafe Queensland states that the requirements of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 take precedence over the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760. Queensland is not a pure AS/NZS 3760 jurisdiction. The Regulation's intervals win.
The maximum intervals, by class of work
- Construction work, general, transportable and fixed equipment: 6 months
- Manufacturing, double insulated equipment: 12 months
- Manufacturing, not double insulated: 6 months
- Service work, where there is no safety switch: 12 months
- Office work, where there is no safety switch: 5 years
- Amusement work, double insulated: 12 months; not double insulated: 6 months
- Amusement devices and rides: after each onsite assembly, then every 6 months
Fitting a safety switch is the alternative to the service and office intervals above, not a way out of periodic testing altogether. The safety switch itself still needs the user push-button test every six months and a competent-person test every two years, whatever it is protecting.
Who can do it
WorkSafe states that only a person appointed as competent by the responsible person for the workplace can test and tag electrical equipment. Competence comes from training, experience or qualifications. The moment anything is repaired, though, it becomes licensed electrical work and an offence to do without the appropriate licence.
What you get from us
A durable tag on every item showing the test date and the next test date, a written asset register, and failed equipment removed from service with a warning tag rather than quietly put back on the shelf.
What we install
Fluke and Wavecom test equipment, with results recorded to an asset register rather than a clipboard.

Who we do it for
We do this work for businesses, resorts, body corporates and property managers.
Testing and tagging on site
Every appliance, every interval, and the register to prove it
Test and tag is a compliance obligation with a paper trail. The register is the deliverable as much as the testing is.
-
01Work around the trade
Kitchens, bars and function spaces get done before service or after close. Nobody wants a tester under a table at lunchtime.
-
02Test it, do not eyeball it
Every appliance tested to the standard and every safety switch timed. A tag means nothing if the test behind it did not happen.
-
03The register, handed back complete
Asset list, test dates, next due dates. That is the document your insurer and your auditor actually want.
Straight answers
Test and Tag: your questions
What test and tag interval applies to a resort or a pub?
It depends on the class of work in each area, and the WorkSafe table does not spell out accommodation as its own class. Rather than guess, we walk the site with you, work out which class each area falls under, and set the interval from there. What does not change is your primary duty of care as a PCBU.
Does new equipment need testing and tagging?
New equipment does not need electrical testing before first use, but it does need a visual check and an entry in the register so the first retest date is tracked. That is where most sites fall down at audit.
Can any electrician do test and tag in Queensland?
Testing and tagging itself is not licensed work when done by a competent person. Repairing the equipment is. We do both, which means a failed item does not sit in a corner waiting for a second contractor.
