What lighting survives salt air, storm season and the odd gecko?
Check the IP rating before you fall in love with the fitting. That is the single most useful thing to know about lighting in Far North Queensland. Salt air, wet season humidity and horizontal rain will find anything specified for a courtyard in Brisbane. Lighting is our second biggest category, 6,465 jobs since 2020, and plenty of those were us replacing gear that would have lasted fine anywhere else.
Inside the house
Downlights, pendants, battens, under-bench strip, wardrobe and verandah lighting, plus the switching to suit. A lot of the interior work comes off renovations, 1,701 kitchen jobs and 1,211 bathroom jobs, where the lighting gets planned around the bench, the rangehood and where you actually stand. If you are laying out a kitchen, talk to us before the ceiling gets sheeted. Moving a downlight after fit-off costs more than putting it in the right spot at rough-in.
Garden and landscape lighting
We have done palm uplighting and garden runs through resort grounds around Port Douglas, and the same approach works on a suburban block or an acreage driveway. Cable gets buried deep enough to survive a future garden bed, joints get made off properly, and fittings get picked for a climate that eats the cheap ones. The most common fault we find in outdoor enclosures is not water. It is ants and geckos. They move into a junction box or a photocell, and the lights start doing something strange at odd hours. Worth knowing before you assume the whole run is stuffed.
Pool and outdoor areas
989 pool and spa jobs on the books, plus deck, path and entertaining area lighting. Pool lights and pool pumps became prescribed electrical equipment in Queensland on 1 April 2025, so ring us before you order a replacement pool light online. Around pools and outdoor kitchens, the rating of the fitting and the way the cable is run matter more than the brand on the box.
LED upgrades
Halogen downlights and old fluorescent battens are the usual swap. Two things decide whether you are happy afterwards. The first is driver quality, because the driver is what fails, not the LED. The second is keeping colour temperature consistent through the house, so one room does not read warm and the next one blue. If you are keeping your dimmers, tell us. Not every LED plays nicely with an existing dimmer. Sheds and workshops are worth doing too, 805 shed jobs so far, and the difference is obvious the first time you use it.
Commercial and hospitality
Restaurant and bar fit-outs, shopfronts, car parks, illuminated signage (680 jobs), and exit and emergency lighting (223 jobs). We have looked after the Court House Hotel for years, along with a couple of the bigger beachfront resorts and some of the Macrossan Street venues. Commercial customers get our Same Day Service Guarantee: ring by 2pm on a business day and we attend that day. We work around trade, service times and guests rather than shutting a room down for the day.
Who is doing the work
Four electricians and two apprentices, Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence 82270, fully insured, based at Craiglie. Work is done to AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules, and you get a Certificate of Testing and Compliance for the installation work. Planned work is quoted in writing before we start. If a light goes down in a venue on a Saturday night, we run a 24/7 callout.

Still working out what is wrong?

Who we do it for
We do this work for homeowners, businesses, property managers, body corporates and resorts.
Lighting a place like this
Outside is where it earns its keep
Gardens up here are half the house. Lighting them properly is the difference between a garden you look at in daylight and one you use after dark.
-
01Plan it around how you use the space
Paths, steps and the places people actually stand. Lighting a garden evenly is a wash; lighting it well is a series of decisions.
-
02Gear that survives the wet season
Bollards and garden fittings live outdoors in the tropics. Sealed, coastal rated, and installed so water runs away from the termination rather than into it.
-
03Set up so it looks after itself
On a timer or a sensor, circuits split so a failed fitting does not take the whole garden out, and gear you can get parts for.
Straight answers
Lighting: your questions
Can I change a light fitting myself?
No. Light fittings get wired in, so that is work for a licensed electrician. Changing a globe in an existing fitting is fine, and so is anything that plugs into a power point, like a lamp. Once you are disconnecting wiring, opening a fitting or working at the ceiling rose, that is our job. If you have already had a go and something has stopped working, tell us when you ring. It saves us guessing.
What does a lighting job cost in Port Douglas?
A lighting job is priced on what you want, the access and the state of the existing wiring. Swapping ten downlights in an accessible ceiling is a very different day to running new circuits through an old Queenslander with a tight roof space, or trenching cable across a garden, which is why we do not publish rates. We look at the job first, then give you a price before we start. No surprises at the end.
Why do my LED downlights keep failing or flickering?
Usually the driver, not the light itself. Cheap drivers cook in a hot roof space, and up here roof spaces get very hot. The other common causes are a dimmer that was never matched to the LEDs, a mixed batch of fittings from different suppliers, or a loose connection in the ceiling. We test rather than guess. Fault finding is our biggest category at 8,840 jobs, so this is familiar ground.
Do you do garden lighting for houses, not just resorts?
Yes. The resort work is where we learnt what lasts, but most of our landscape lighting is on ordinary houses and acreage blocks. Uplights on palms, path and step lighting, driveway and gate lighting, lit entertaining areas. We plan the runs so the cable is out of the way of mowers and future garden beds, and we choose fittings that will still be there in a few wet seasons.
We run a holiday let in Port Douglas. Can you do lighting work around guests?
That is most of what we do. Port Douglas alone accounts for 8,998 of our jobs since 2020, across 1,028 separate customers, a lot of them holiday lets, apartments and resorts. We book around changeover, work quietly in occupied buildings, and keep managers and agents in the loop. If something fails mid-stay, we have a 24/7 callout and commercial customers get our Same Day Service Guarantee, so a call by 2pm on a business day is attended that day.
