Claymation scene of a BH Electrics electrician and a homeowner sliding a new oven into its cabinet in a finished kitchen

Oven installation electricians who check the circuit first

Ovens, cooktops and rangehoods wired properly, in houses, units and commercial kitchens from Port Douglas to Mossman. That is 492 jobs since 2020, including the induction upgrades that need a new circuit and sometimes a bigger switchboard.

What does an oven or cooktop swap involve, and when does the switchboard get dragged into it?

Before you buy, check two things: the appliance's installation instructions, and what your switchboard has spare. An induction cooktop is not a like for like swap for gas or an old ceramic hotplate. Most of them need their own dedicated circuit run back to the board, and on an older house there is often nothing spare to run it from. Far better to know that a fortnight out than on delivery morning with the kitchen fitter standing in the driveway.

We have done 492 oven and cooktop jobs since 2020, on top of 1,701 kitchen renovations. The pattern is familiar.

What the job usually involves

Freestanding ovens often arrive with a plug and lead, so if there is already a correctly rated dedicated power point behind the unit it can be straightforward. Cooktops are different. Almost all of them are hardwired, which means a cable run, an isolating switch somewhere you can actually reach without leaning across a hot pan, and the circuit sized for the load the manufacturer specifies. Rangehoods want a point in the cupboard above, positioned so the ducting still fits. All new work goes in to AS/NZS 3000, the Wiring Rules.

Induction is where the surprises happen. A full width induction cooktop draws a lot more than the old hotplates it replaced. If your board is full, we either free up space, add a sub board or quote a switchboard upgrade. We have done 1,006 switchboard jobs, so this is not something we hand off.

Commercial kitchens

Pubs, resorts and cafes are a big part of this work. The Court House Hotel and several of the other Macrossan Street venues are long standing customers. Commercial gear is a different animal: three phase, dedicated isolation, combi ovens, fryers and cool room compressors sharing a board that was sized for a smaller menu. Commercial customers get our Same Day Service Guarantee, so a call by 2pm on a business day is attended that day, and we run 24/7 emergency callout (939 emergency jobs and counting). A dead fryer at six on a Saturday in July is not a Monday problem.

The tropical bit

Outdoor and alfresco kitchens are everywhere up here, and salt air off the Coral Sea eats them. Isolators, power points and appliance connections in an open outdoor kitchen at Four Mile or Oak Beach corrode from the inside long before the stainless steel looks tired. We use properly rated weatherproof enclosures and stainless fixings. We also mount gear out of the wet season rain and the prevailing salt spray, rather than straight in front of it. Wet season humidity does the same slow damage inside a busy commercial kitchen with poor ventilation.

Can you trust us with it

Brad and Leanne Sims run BH Electrics out of Craiglie. QLD Electrical Contractor Licence 82270, fully insured, four electricians and two apprentices. When we install or alter a circuit for your oven or cooktop, you get a Certificate of Testing and Compliance from us as the licensed electrical contractor. That is the piece of paper your warranty claim, your insurer or your building certifier will eventually ask for. Keep it in the kitchen drawer.

If your oven has stopped rather than been replaced, start with fault finding. That is our biggest single category at 8,840 jobs, and often the element or the appliance is fine and the problem is the connection behind it.

Getting the appliance in

The circuit matters more than the appliance

A new oven or cooktop is often a bigger electrical job than a kitchen job. Modern induction pulls far more than the thing it replaced.

  1. Contactors and control gear inside a commercial switchboard
    01

Check what the circuit will carry

An induction cooktop can want more than double the old electric one. If the circuit will not carry it, that gets sorted before the appliance arrives, not on installation day.

  2. A finished kitchen with the rangehood, cooktop and bench lighting all wired in
    02

    Wired and mounted properly

Dedicated circuit, correct isolation, and the appliance connected to the manufacturer requirement so the warranty stands.

  3. An outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill, rangehood and sink under a lined ceiling
    03

    Outdoor kitchens too

Built-in grills, outdoor rangehoods and bench points. Outside means weatherproof gear and a safety switch, not the same fittings moved outdoors.

Straight answers

Ovens and Cooktops: your questions

Can I plug in my new oven myself?

If the oven has a moulded plug and lead and there is an existing, correctly rated dedicated power point behind it, plugging it in is not electrical work. Hardwiring anything, altering the circuit, installing a cooktop or moving the power point is, and that has to be done by a licensed electrician in Queensland. Worth knowing too: sliding an old oven out often disturbs decades old wiring behind it, and appliance manufacturers routinely ask for proof of compliant installation when a warranty claim comes in.

Does an induction cooktop really need its own circuit?

Usually, yes. Most full width induction cooktops draw considerably more than the ceramic or gas unit they replace, and the manufacturer will specify a dedicated circuit at a set rating. Sharing it with the oven or the kitchen power points is not on. Send us a photo of the appliance spec plate and a photo of your open switchboard before you buy. We will tell you what it needs, including whether the board has a spare way for it.

What makes one oven or cooktop installation cost more than another?

The cost of an oven or cooktop installation turns on how far the new cable has to run back to the switchboard, whether the board has spare capacity or needs upgrading, single phase versus three phase, and access. A ground floor slab home with an accessible roof space is quick. A double storey unit with a concrete ceiling and a full board is not. We do not publish rates for that reason. We look at the job, then quote before any work starts.

My oven has stopped working. Is it the oven or the wiring?

Test before you buy a new appliance. Fault finding is our largest job category at 8,840 since 2020, and a fair share of dead ovens turn out to be a failed connection, a heat damaged terminal, a tripping circuit or a worn isolator rather than the appliance itself. Testing is energised electrical work under Queensland law, so it needs a licensed electrician. If it is genuinely the oven, we will tell you that too rather than chase it.

Do you do oven and cooktop work in holiday lets and resort apartments?

Constantly. Port Douglas alone accounts for 8,998 of our jobs since 2020, across 1,028 separate customers, and a lot of that is appliance work in managed apartments and resort units where the changeover window is tight. We can coordinate with your property manager or body corporate, work around guest bookings, and get in and out in one visit where the circuit already exists. Several of the bigger resorts and apartment complexes have been on the books for years.
